Details Description: A nice dark brown glazed redware small size canister or jar having a nice fitting lid with a central finial. Although the jar and the lid are of different colors, they fit together very well and we are selling them as found. Both pieces were purchased at an estate sale in the house of the late Lester Breininger, so although the pieces are not signed there is a good chance that they were made at his studio. The jar, which has a round flat base has straight sides which rise to a shoulder followed by a constriction leading to a flared flat rim with an inside ledge where a the lid sits. The jar, which has a dark brown color is glazed inside and out but not on the base. The lid, which is also glazed, displays a lighter brown color that the jar with dark mottling. The lid has a central finial and fits on top of the jar very nicely. This beautiful small size jar which is glazed on the inside with the same color as the outside. The bottom of the pot is unglazed and is unmarked. The jar is only decorated with an incised line near the base and other than that is plain and simple. Just a very nice looking piece which is worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Unknown, but most likely late 1900s or early 2000s. Origin: Purchased in an estate sale at Mr. Lester Breininger's home in Robesonia, Berks County Pennsylvania. Size: The Jar is ~2 1/2" diameter at the base, ~2 1/2" in diameter at the top, and ~3" high without the lid. The lid's finial adds ~3/8" to the height when the lid is on. The piece weighs ~7.3 ounces. Maker: Unknown, but possibly made at the Breininger Pottery. Marks: Unmarked. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A very nice looking and well made canister made in the best Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. Definitely deserves a spot in your contemporary redware collection. Condition: Jar and lid are in excellent condition with no cracks, no repairs, or hairlines. The piece and the lid show signs of onset of glaze crazing as a few lines within the glaze. The piece has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness. There is also a few small scratches to the surface, which are difficult to see but are there. Finally, as we indicated above the lid is of a different color than the jar, but this is the way we got the piece and we are selling it as found.
